It is widely planted as an ornamental in many countries. In Europe, it is sometimes called the Victorian Silver Gum. The Buxton Silver Gum Nature Conservation Reserve near the small town of Buxton, Victoria, supports that largest remaining wild stand of this species. It is a small tree with dense foliage that rarely exceeds 8 metres in height. It has small glaucous blue-green leaves with crenulate margins.
